Ryan Adams & The Cardinals
“♫ I said maybe/ you’re gonna be the one that saves me […] ♫”
Jimi Hendrix did it with Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower—this happens once in a Blue Moon— when a cover version is so unique that it eclipses the intention of the original.
Wonderwall is another one of those songs. Ryan Adams takes Noel Gallagher’s 1990’s Mancunian anthem and makes it his own. Adams arrangement on Love is Hell is softer yet haunting cover. During their 2008 tour, Adams and his Cardinals performed some killer more extended renditions of Wonderwall. After much deliberation—these two are my favorites.
The first is the live rendition from The Dome in Brighton, England. I renamed this one the cathedral version. The middle solos demand that this version be played in a cathedral or any place with lots of space for echoes and harmonies.

The second is a softer more delicate version that’s not as electric as The Dome’s cathedral version but equally as stunning.
