Right Where It Belongs
Nine Inch Nails
“♫ Are you sure what side of the glass you are on? […] And if you look at your reflection
is it all you want it to be? What if you could look right through the cracks? Would you find yourself afraid to see? ♫”
We watched Black Swan the other day. I loved what Darren Aronofsky did with the mirrors. My wife told me there’s only one scene in Black Swan that doesn’t have a mirror or reflective surface—that’s the scene at the end of the film when she’s dancing the Black Swan.
Listening to Right Where It Belongs—would have made a perfect fit at the closing credits of Black Swan. Have your doubts—it’s all in the lyrics:
“♫ What if everything around you/ isn’t quite as it seems? / What if all the world you used to know is an elaborate dream? […] ♫”
Belongs is one of the best understated Nine Inch Nails originals. There are no percussion just keyboards and effects throughout. I love the minimalistic sound. It echoes something hidden just below the reflective service.
Now when I hear Belongs— I’ll remember those mirrors from Black Swan. I must see it again!
